WordPress Front-end Developer

Hook 42, a full-service, distributed web agency delivering Drupal and WordPress development, is currently seeking a full-time Front-end Developer with WordPress experience to join our development team.

Front-end Developers take a visual design and turn it into a web page or user interface using a combination of programming skills (e.g. HTML, CSS, JS) and an understanding of design elements such as layouts, colors, and fonts. The best candidates have a strong understanding of front-end industry trends and web content management systems (in particular, WordPress and Drupal). Experience building responsive websites or web applications is required along with the ability to perform browser and device testing. An understanding of the entire web development process, including design, development, and deployment, with some back-end knowledge, is preferred.

This is a remote position working US time zones, so you need to be able to manage your time effectively, reach across geographies, and time zones. You’ll drive development progress and communicate status, issues and risks up, across, and out. This means you’ll have to overcome the hurdles of working at a distance, overcoming communication gaps, and actively be part of a distributed team.

Responsibilities

  • Participate with the development team and stakeholders to plan new features 
  • Breaks down features into manageable stories to allow for easier coding, reviewing, testing and approval
  • Provide estimates allowing the team to optimize outcomes 
  • Converts wireframes and mockups into responsive UIs for websites or web applications
  • Participates in retrospectives to gain knowledge and improve the quality of products delivered
  • Writes clean, readable, adaptable and quality unit tests alongside production code
  • Reviews others code to ensure delivery of high-quality functionality and participate in an environment of learning
  • Communicates effectively with team members and clients on matters that involve obtaining or providing information requiring some explanation or interpretation of facts, policies, and practices in order to reach agreement
  • Researches new front-end tools and techniques; provide input to the Architects for pros and cons of front-end technologies

Qualifications

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, and 4+ years of experience working in web development as a programmer preferably at a web agency
  • 2+ year of domain-specific experience (WordPress)
  • Fluent with HTML5, CSS, and the PHP necessary to create and modify templates
  • Experience with JavaScript and jQuery
  • Ability to write JavaScript without the use of frameworks
  • Experience with JSON and structured data
  • Basic site building
  • Installation and configurations of plugins, modules, or libraries
  • Software peer review process and adherence to coding standards
  • Understanding of decoupled architectures
  • Pluses for:

    • Experience with Open Graph and Social Media integration
    • Experience with multilingual sites
    • Experience with Gutenberg in WordPress
    • Experience with modern frontend frameworks

  • Consistent use of ticket management systems (e.g. Jira, Zoho, Basecamp, Asana, Trello)
  • Strong knowledge of Git workflows and supporting tools
  • Comfortable with front-end devops tools (e.g. Gulp, Grunt, Webpack, SCSS, LESS)
  • Experience with grid systems (e.g. Susy, Singularity, Bootstrap, Foundation, FlexBox)
  • Comfortable working with debugging tools (e.g. Firebug, Chrome Inspector)
  • Comfortable testing against different browsers and devices
  • Experience with local development environments (e.g. XAMPP, MAMP, Vagrant, Docker, Acquia Dev Desktop)
  • Debugging best practices (e.g. XDebug, Chrome DevTools)
  • Experience with managed hosting platforms (e.g. Acquia, Pantheon, Platform.sh)
  • Comfortable with conferencing systems including screen sharing (e.g. Zoom, GoToMeeting)
  • Familiarity with and consistent use of instant messaging programs (e.g. Slack, Skype)
  • Proficiency with document tools (e.g. G Suite, Microsoft Office)
  • Deep familiarity with Software Development Lifecycle process
